MASTER OF EMOTION – YA Li-Sci-Fi (Light Science Fiction) – First in a series of four – COMPLETED August 2008 at 95K words.
When a reclusive teen with the enhanced ability to read others’ emotions finds more teens with similar powers, he must confront his fears before a budding romance and his twin brother’s life fall into the hands of the devious doctor who created them all.
Beau’s getting loads of attention lately—whether he wants it or not—even if it’s his worst nightmare.
Now his irritating twin brother expects him to embrace his abnormality, too?
Sure. His twin brother calls it his “ability” – Beau’s gift for feeling and experiencing someone else’s emotions with just a touch. But when he’s surrounded by an onslaught of overactive teenage emotion and a twin who eagerly touches everyone to read their thoughts, his ability seems like a curse. The safest way out is to put up a wall and hide behind it.
What is it about a girl and danger that makes a seventeen-year-old guy leap forward when he ought to step back?
Of course, Beau will be the first to admit the girl is totally worth the trauma. And it’s kinda amazing finding five more sensory enhanced teenagers, just like him, though they seriously invade his personal space. Then just when he thought life had finally cut him a break, they end up as lab rats to the psycho doctor who killed their mothers and made them orphans. What Beau didn’t see coming was having the most painful threat come from one of their own.
What’s a guy have to do to survive it all?
THE single clenched fist lifted and ready,
Or the open asking hand held out and waiting.
Choose: For we meet by one or the other.
“Master of Emotion” was a quarter-finalist in the 2011 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards (entered under the title of “Walls”)
The Music in My Head
Movies have soundtracks. Why not novels?
By intertwining music and a novel, the words give mental images to the music and the music enhances the emotion of the words.
The musical artist that fits best with my novel is John Vesely, who records under the name Secondhand Serenade. He is a talented singer/songwriter who is a modern “one-man show” singing and performing all of the multilayered vocals and instruments himself. Check out his website at http://www.myspace.com/secondhandserenade to listen to and buy his music. I think you’ll agree he’s very talented. The teenagers and young adults in my house are big fans.
He’s not only talented, but he’s the voice that I “hear” in my head when Beau, the main character in Master of Emotion, talks. Listen and see if you agree. Within the text of the novel, when you find:
“(Listen to the Master of Emotion Soundtrack – “Song Title” at http://www.myspace.com/secondhandserenade/music/songs/song title-#)”
I invite you to go to the internet and listen to one of Secondhand Serenade’s songs that fit the emotion of that moment in the novel. I’ve included a website address or two where you might be able to listen to the full song. But if you like the music, go back later and buy the songs—make your own soundtrack.

I wrote these songs lyrics one night. Someday, someone will write the music. If I’m ever famous, I’ll ask John Vesley of Secondhand Serenade:)
Dive in Deep
I built a wall
At the shore,
So the crashing waves wouldn’t bother me no more. It held out all the swells because I made it high.
It kept me dry.
Break it down.
Make it fall.
Let the water come caress my fractured wall.
Then pull me in so I can learn to swim again.
The water’s churning, moaning, breakers foaming.
A tidal wave that makes me leap. The wave is crashing; swaying, white caps playing
I want to dive in deep.
I built a wall
Around my heart,
So the world and I would always stay apart.
It kept out all the anger, fear, and bitter strife.
It kept out life.
Let me drown
In your love.
Let me bathe in feelings given from above.
It makes me want to swim in swells and wade in waves.
It truly saves.
Our love is churning, moaning, breakers foaming.
A tidal wave that makes me leap.
Our love is swelling, swaying, passion is playing
I want to dive in deep.
… Don’t save me.
